He’s about 18 years old, intelligent and efficient, and she (thirty years older) clearly both likes him and doesn’t trust him, is well aware of her total dependence on him while they’re in the wilds but also assumes he’s cheating her to some extent, admires his resourcefulness while being somewhat disdainful of his vanity. I’d love to see more of this (and perhaps the manga fills in some of the gaps) but he’s often at the edges of the narrative.
