What was the legislation prior to this? I ask because when I got involved with a women's centre in the mid 90s, there was a huge fuss about whether to allow trans women into the centre: the objections mainly arose from lesbian women. I wasn't aware of what the law actually said at the time (I objected to their views on the grounds of fairness - if someone's gone through all that to be female, I think they should be treated the same as women who had physical female equipment from birth).
