Tolstoy!

Well, the battle at Borodino was certainly horrid, and also fairly faithfully depicted--he talks in his own journals and letters and so forth about pacing the battlefield, and speaking to the peasants still alive, who drove the many, many wagons full of corpses that had to be buried.

Wedding custom was to display the gifts on a table for all to see. (And someone had to guard it, too, usually a young male relative, but sometimes hirelings.)
