I've always felt that I personally would probably not choose to have reconstruction after a mastectomy, especially not a double one. It would just remind me of what I had lost, and I can see a number of advantages to not having to deal with breasts any longer. But that feeling of mine has NOTHING to do with what others may or should feel (except insofar as hearing someone else's perspective may be helpful or interesting). I can easily see others feeling quite the opposite.

This is not an entirely theoretical business for me. I have two sisters who have had breast cancer, one of whom did have a double mastectomy not long ago -- she has not AFAIK yet decided whether to get reconstruction or not, and I am not discussing it with her unless she brings it up. Fortunately we don't carry either BRCA1 or BRCA2, but of course I still feel at much higher risk than others.
