Random belated comment (I have just read the whole thrilling saga after you linked the St. Cuthbert tag on a more recent post): I wonder if Murphy can't be found in the lists because, as a stereotypical Irish name, it is his nickname rather than his real name (c.f. A.B. Joubert, referred to as 'Frenchy')? If so, looking at the list of crew names in the Naval Court report, my guess would be that he is A.B. Patrick Ryan, and was among the saved.
