It could be that the advowson of Chew was held by the crown.

1643 was an interesting year to be a person of the cloth. My own researches into the records of St Mary's Chatham for that year bring up a stormy petrel and a half, the Rev.Thomas Vaughan: 'Thomas Vahan, priest, for so he saith he is' hanging on like grim death to a church in a Parliamentarian stronghold (and others, as he was also a pluralist, naughty man).
