I agree - and I can't see why doing that wouldn't be one of the most absorbing challenges in writing about the past. Why people skimp on it is a mystery to me, though I suspect that some people are "tone deaf", certainly when it comes to historical language. Only last week I heard a radio drama in which Tom Paine said "I'm okay." I groaned.
