I've used it both ways myself! In this case, I meant the former.

I may well be wrong about any or all of the above points, I'll happily admit! I'm very far from being a sitcom buff - just some random person staring at the ceiling cracks. It's hard to be totally wrong or totally right, though, when generalizing about such a diverse group of shows.
