Home and Away

I'm rather stupid. It only just occurred to me that for many of my friends here the move of LJ's servers to Russia is also the move of LJ's servers out of their own country. The latter aspect could be quite as unsettling as the former, I imagine. Whereas for those of use who have always written our home thoughts from abroad it is, from that point of view, business as usual.

Of course I don't trust Putin's government, but nor do I Trump's. In terms of LGBTQI issues, for example, I'm not keen on either trawling my locked posts (no nor Mark Zuckerberg neither, though by your smiling you seem to say so). Although, to be honest, they'd probably be bored to death if they did.

You'd be surprised at what GCHQ get up to.

No. I don't trust any government much, for much. I certainly don't trust any of them to respect privacy, and I think only an idiot would post anything they were desperate to keep private anywhere on the internet.

That would certainly explain the strength of a reaction which took me by surprise.

Nothing on the Internet is totally safe - and you have to assume that if any security service ANYWHERE in the world wanted to look, they'd find a way... so, I don't see much that's different.

I hear you.

The weirdies seem so fascinated by trans women but in the end we're just about the same as any other woman- I suspect my day to day life would bore the pants of the average secret service wonk!

I don't trust security anywhere, but I figure I'm safe enough as I have no money, influence, charisma, power, and don't even post anything that the purient would find interesting.

I hadn't thought of it like that, either, but it's a good point. Also different for us here: although it will affect us, it's not our election that has just been influenced from the outside.

I'm using LJ basically only for communities (and I saw your post because I'm trying to figure out if linguaphiles will move to DW or to be reborn there). I hope so...

There has also been a counter movement of an LJ revival that started on FB and now has a community page here on LJ. I for one am staying on LJ till hell freezes over.

So I am not the implicit target audience to answer your question, since I started crossposting from Dreamwidth in 2013 when I thought LJ was just going to die out from disuse and I don't plan to leave the platform unless it becomes actively unsafe for its users, but I suspect the server move from the U.S. to Russia would not have been so unsettling to so many LJ-users in the U.S. if Russia had not just interfered in the U.S. elections. The combination is what feels really unsafe.

Yes, that's a fair point.

What I was about to type when he leaped onto my keyboard: if the servers had moved to, say, Sweden, I think U.S.-based users would still have felt weird about no longer having them in the country, but not actively threatened.

Yes, exactly this (except that I haven't cross-posted since 2009). Otherwise, it'd be unobjectionably logical for a company based primarily in a given country to have its servers located in that country as well.

Having been burned by the sudden disconnect of servers on GreatestJournal and losing around 4 years' worth of journal entries (and that was AFTER copying a couple of years of entries already back into LJ one at a time), I am simply copying my journal entries over to DW for peace of mind. I don't think Russia cares about me or my posts, I rarely post anything political anymore, and we're not safe from intrusion anywhere, but I DO care about my past entries existing and I'm just happy I can have them in two places.

Having a backup is eminently sensible and I back up my LJ offline using LJ Archive. I'm not entirely convinced that DW will outlast LJ, but it's unlikely that they'll both vanish at the same time, so having two copies is a good safety measure.

We're all especially reeling from the recent allegations (which are vague enough to be unsettling) that Russia interfered with our election; I think a few months ago it wouldn't have been as big a deal. I'm not going anywhere, though I've been momre at home on DW for years since LJ's interface got so annoying.
