We have eight toll bridges in my waterlogged region. Tolls were originally charged to pay off the bridges ... but some of those bridges were finished in 1937, and they still all charge tolls, which keep going up. Reading of the elimination of the tolls on the Severn Bridge was one of those incidents giving Americans the false impression that the UK is a paradise.

One of our bridges has already gone all-electronic, and the others are threatening to, and what's to happen to the toll-takers' livelihood is not clear. At least, if they're no longer taking tolls, they'll be at less risk of being killed by errant drivers crashing into toll booths, which happens occasionally.
