I know what you mean. This isn't a particularly religious essay, of course, which perhaps helps. But even in some texts where the Christianity is more front and centre, he's often good on self-deception (Screwtape) and self-analysis in general (A Grief Observed). Which is odd, because when I look at him from a slight distance, I don't necessarily think of him as a man whose strongest suit is self-knowledge.
