So, just totting things up... first it was the Swiss banning minarets, then the Belgians banning burqas, and now the French have followed suit (when they're not carrying out ethnic cleansing of the Roma), and all in the name of tolerance and equality.

Bloody foreigners.

OTOH, the Saudi Arabians have banned pretty much everything except the burka, so I'm not sure that this doesn't just balance out... I have strong personal (and arguably religious, since I'm one o' they goddess worshipping pagans) objections to covering my face in public, but would be expected to do so if I went to some of the Middle East. Should it work both ways? If not, why not?

Absolutely it should work both ways. I take it as read that the Saudi government in particular is one of the most oppressive to women in the world, probably second only to Afghanistan under the Taliban.

It's about as repressive as it gets. I guess we have higher expectations of the French!

We do. My disgust and disappointment with them is really a back-handed compliment.

It´s always the foreigners causing all the trouble! Taking our jobs, wives, cars and the better animals away from us who pay taxes. And on top of that, they speak strangely with cloven tongues and refuse to think and be like us. Italian campanilismo is the best solution. To each village their own president but not too high towers overtowering ours, please. Also, nuns should be force-dressed in short skirts to teach them some sensible femanism.

I believe that it is just as wrong to decree that a woman MUST NOT veil as it is to decree that she MUST. She's an adult, she can make her own choices.

Right?

It's not rocket science, is it?
