I suspect he is not, in fact, much of a godbotherer of any creed, but dare not admit the fact. I do wish US politicians didn't feel they had to profess faith for political reasons.

I've only just discovered, while reading a biography of his mother, that King John, though he'd go to mass, didn't take communion, which must explain some of the church hostility to him. He was also apt to throw things if the sermon took too long.
