The blame is probably distributed pretty widely. In this case the implants were made by a French company that has since, I think but am not sure, gone bust (it's hard to avoid puns in this area). Clearly they were at fault for using non-medical grade silicon - and if they still exist should be first in the firing line. Arguably the French regulatory authorities were also lax, and I've been waiting to see if David Cameron will be announcing a ban on the import of French breasts, as a belated revenge for their ban on British beef. Then there's the question of whether the British companies that used their products used due diligence in sourcing them.
I hope it will all get sorted out - but it will take time, and it's not the kind of question that medical decisions should be made to hang on.
As for why women get them, there are all kinds of reasons, but few are frivolous.
