That tattoo bloke on BH also said that the reconstruction implants were about "self-esteem based on appearance" - IOW, vanity, because there's no medical need to have anything restored after a mastectomy.

Agreed. I do hope he was saying that as a way of undermining the reconstructive/cosmetic binary, which (for reasons I've gone into above) I'm suspicious of too, but I suspect he was just stirring.
