I think it probably is bureaucratic - I can imagine further office complications in, for instance, the birth certificates of children born to people who've changed their official gender but reproduced in their original one. I can just see some pedantic official scratching his head over "mother" and "father" on the form... it does seem awfully intrusive though. As for the public loo issue, it's odd how many people seem to be convinced that a trans woman is Really A Man whose only motive for going through such an arduous procedure is to get into female-only facilities and attack people. Seems there are still a lot of spinsters looking for men under the bed.
