Yes, that's a good point - the language of pride can indeed be a response to shaming, and there's no doubt that "Proud to be black!" is more rhetorically effective than "Not ashamed to be black!". And, of course, the assertion of membership of a community may be all the more necessary and telling when that community is oppressed.
