If you haven't been to Tazawa-ko, it's well worth a visit - you can cycle around the lake or take an all-day bus trip, and it's a pleasant place to stay.
I'm now desperately trying to remember the nearby town I visited which gave me the opportunity to see traditional houses - Kakunodate? Right now, my Google fu is weak.
