I think most seaside places can be pretty bleak in midwinter. That said, I've seen in more than one New Year there, which was a lot of fun, with a big ship's bell being tolled outside the Friendship Inn, and a piper on hand. It definitely helps having a house on the sea side of the street, rather than the Cors Fochno side.
