I puzzled over "aber" versus "sondern" as a child, too--especially, why did English dislike "sunder" so much as to let it slide into obsolescence, in favor of borrowing "except."
Still don't know why :) but I suppose that it and all of the not quite aligned prepositions fed a bit of my interest in Middle English, which I didn't meet till undergrad.
