The grotto at Goldney Hall in Bristol, built in the mid-18th century by the man whose ship rescued Alexander Selkirk, is open to the public but one day in the year. It is dedicated to the sea. My daughter and I braved its shell-encrusted depths, armed with nothing more than a mobile phone...
