"We escaped from liberty to the south bank."

These were the first words I heard when I turned on Radio 4 as I drove home from work today. Aha, I thought, this must be a programme about how in 1599 James Burbage got his company to deconstruct The Theatre from its original setting in the Liberty of Halliwell, where the freeholder had refused to renew the lease, shipped it over the Thames (according to some in a midnight flit), and reconstructed it on the South Bank as the Globe. How interesting!

In fact, however, it turned out to be about Shami Chakrabarti, the director of Liberty, heading for the British Film Institute to indulge in a few hours' movie-watching. Actually, it was pretty interesting anyway, and Chakrabarti turned out to have a good sense of humour - something that, as she pointed out, can't always be apparent when she's talking about torture and human rights abuse.

Yes, that was an odd phrase! I also wanted to tell her that, much as I share her admiration for Gregory Peck's performance in To Kill a Mockingbird, she still ought to read the book!
