I've not read all of Banks by any means, and none of his science fiction, but I've admired him for a long time, and The Bridge (of those I've read) above all. A big book for me.

Yes, very sad news. Though I'm not a dedicated Banks fan, I've read and enjoyed many of his SF books and he has always been entertaining and informative whenever I've seen him on panels as SF conventions.
