Tasting Notes 4

ブラックサンダー (Black Thunder) is a dark chocolate bar with little biscuity kibbles lodged like thunderstones in its heart. It's very good, justifying its boast of lightning-class tastiness (おいしさイナズマ級). But more than that, and less expectedly, it's also quite a hit with young ladies (if I've translated 若い女性に大ヒット中 correctly, which I probably haven't). A lot of the packet is in English, as you can see, but I think that's more for coolness than because it's actually aimed at gaijin.





Baby Star Ramen (ベビースターラーメン) looks much like the picture on the packet - i.e. not unlike ramen noodles, though shorter. The nearest equivalent I can think of is the stuff they use in some kinds of Bombay mix, though this is thinner, and of course lacks the raisins, lentils, etc. What it does have is a very nice chicken flavour - again, rather subtler (or just less strong) than I would expect in a British snack.

The mascot figure is young Beichan (not to be confused with the ballad hero of that name), and on this packet he appears in the guise of a sumo wrestler. Hence the exclamation, 'Dosukoi!' (どすこい) which is of course what one always shouts when one sees such a person. (No, I don't know why.)

I don't guarantee that eating Baby Star Ramen will turn you into a professional wrestler, but your breath will smell slightly of chicken, and that can't be bad.

Hm, ...dommage as M. said and shrugged her shoulders understandingly, when someone's dog had been driven over or, as M. Cro Magnon later suggested, simply been thrown into the next poubelle afterwards: for, as Black Thunder seems to be for Young Ladies; I guess, I'm not getting any! And I love licorice much as any other Scandinavian impostible person. Ah, well (say, wherefrom was licorice again? Is it true, they grow it on trees in Finland but only when Finnish tango is being played and danced to??) I'd better put up a new poll at the club clearing the matter with no fäng shui, either.
