Movement under way in California to ban divorce

"California voters outlawed gay marriage in 2008, largely on the argument that a ban is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage. If that's the case, then Marcotte reasons voters should have no problem banning divorce.

"'Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more,' the 38-year-old married father of two said."

How far will he get with this noble quest?

As someone who votes in California, I may be bitter after the last several elections. Honestly, California voters make such counterproductive choices, so incredibly frequently, that I'm afraid people might take the proposition seriously and vote it into law.

Do! After all, there's no doubt that the Bible condemns this unnatural practice: viz. Matthew 19.6.

Don't worry, I think it's just to make a point!

I like the idea of it as a satire. I'm just worried in the current climate, it might pass!

Well, I guess we'll have to rely on the common sense of the good voters of California...

Oh.

Here's what worries me. I grew up in Reagan-Reagan-Bush. Every time, every time, as we were crying and rending our garments for weeks post-election, I'd hear person upon person say something like "Well, the tiny silver lining is that people will see how bad he is, and then everyone will finally GET IT."

But that kept not happening. And I lost faith in "politics that are evil" being able to show people what's wrong with them.

If that makes any sense. I know they're different. But I fear for good sense.

Oh, I fear for good sense too. And of course this bill isn't going to get anywhere, because it will require people to vote away their own rights instead of other people's. (How many marriages in the US end in divorce? 40%? 50%?) I hope it will make a few people who voted through Prop 8 face up to their own hypocrisy, though - and that's the point of it, as I understand it. Not that a few is enough, but it's a start.
