On today's Awfully Big Blog Adventure I've been musing on the fantasy and reality of royalty.

I could say a lot about the appeal of royalty and the point of having it in the first place, but that would be tiresome. Instead, I'll just make the equally tiresome correction that Monty Python's Dennis isn't an anarchist. He's a Marxist.

As the flist Civil War historian I could say an equally large amount about its lack of appeal and the total pointlessness of having it but that would be equally tiresome :op

We already know all about its lack of appeal. That hardly needs saying in this forum. What our host expressed bafflement over was why anybody enjoys having it.

As for how pointless it is, a discussion of that question should be held in the context I suggested, of what was the point of having it in the first place, and also in the context of what would happen if it were eliminated. As a Civil War historian, you presumably know what happened when it was eliminated then, and why that turned out to be a less wonderful idea than it seemed at the time. You also presumably know that the proximate causes were later dealt with in other ways. All that's left is the bread and circuses, and if you think that's totally pointless, or that it could be done without, that's what would be tiresome to explain. Emma Goldman already explained it.

I still have a passing regret that the original 'Sea Green Incorruptible', Colonel Thomas Rainborowe was assassinated by Royalist terrorists (to use a modern term) before the Republican Commonwealth had time to settle down :o(

He at least understood that you could run things without a monarchy.........

You can run things without a monarchy ... that's what happens in the UK now ... but that's not the same thing as the legal and cultural implications of doing without one.

The phrase in my head (though I haven't checked the source) was "anarcho-syndicalist collective", but I thought "anarchist" would probably do in the circumstances.
