It's a sad reflection, but it occurs to me that I cannot imagine any circumstances under which Ed Miliband would say of a strike (at least, of a strike in the United Kingdom), "This action is justified. The strikers have my support and the support of the Labour Party."

The closest I ever heard him come was during the student protests last year, when he said something on the lines of "I was thinking about joining them, then I noticed it was time for Countdown." But that was in his post-election firebrand days.

Ah, no doubt it's the same problem that prevents him coming to the Big Meeting.

"Diary pressures" and the scary prospect of being seen at the same event as Bob Crow, eh? Yet this is the same Ed Miliband who actually shared a platform a few months ago with Vince Cable, whose line on industrial action is that people should have to right to strike if and only if they never exercise it.

It is a sad reflection, but it's also a sad reflection on more than one thing.
