In such a situation, people scrabble round for all kinds of unlikely solutions. They may lose a whole generation in the process, but even the people of Hamelin wouldn't have fallen for this analysis by Pied Racist David Starkey, whose incisive analysis of the situation is that "Whites have become black":

I blame the Beeb for asking him to pontificate on a subject he knew nothing about (and him for doing it, of course). What next, D Beckham on the Tudors?

What really pisses me off about this is that they clearly knew that he was going to invoke the ghost of Powell, and they still let him on!

I have written in and complained. The thing is, I think that the historian's training should help people to form good analyses. But you have to use it, damn it. It's just so frustrating that the sort of historians given this kind of platform so often turn out to be cranks. And then there's no one to actually correct truly poor historical interpretations made by non-historians.

I suppose that we should be grateful that Starkey was so clearly racist. At least we might be able to get rid of him. Ferguson is too clever to be caught out that way.

I've always considered Starkey a dick as well as a bloody awful historian and this does nothing to alter than view :o(
