More Ancestral Cigarette Cards

Thanks to my (third) cousin Tim, I now have a full set of grandparents for my own great-grandfather, young Thomas Robinson Butler, whose writings have supplied so many of these pages in one way or another. John Exton North (1782-1840) was the missing ancestor, and he died before TRB was even born, but he makes up for his late arrival by appearing in full colour.



The only trouble with this kind of picture is that everyone is shown at a different age. One of TRB's grandmothers is aged 18 in 1797, the other in her seventies over sixty years later. But perhaps that makes it more interesting?

You are lucky! There is no photographic evidence of my paternal Grandfather nor anyone earlier. Well, he IS in a shot of his battalion at Gallipoli.

Maybe it's only in my head, but the second pic (Annasomething?) seems to look like you. For a fleeting moment I wondered if the entire ensemble was a Kind Hearts and Coronets deal.

Annabella Dundas Oswald? Well, I suppose she has a 1/32nd share in my genes, so it's not impossible.

I wish I had the acting (and other) skills necessary to pull off a Kind Hearts and Coronets deal - that would be great!

I've got a few of TRB's paternal great-grandparents, too, but that's where my well runs dry as far as pictures are concerned (at least for now!). I know I'm very lucky to have them.
