In search of ideas for Christmas reading, I made the mistake of Googling the phrase 'Should be required reading.' It turns out to describe almost a million items, and even though some fall outside my range of interest ("This gem of a book should be required reading for all lactation consultants and other health care providers", etc), I could spend the rest of my life just trying to catch up on all the books without which I'm apparently incapable of functioning properly as a 21st century human. Is this depressing or liberating?

You've got a whole personality test meme right there...

Me, I vote for liberating.

Liberating! You couldn't even read all the Google hits, let alone the books.

And snap #99 (revisited). Well, not the Googling (what were you thinking?) - but was just writing up an entry admitting and accepting the fact that there'll never be time to read all the books I want to read... Er, haven't had time to finish and post it yet.

Ick ! I am completely uninterested in required reading lists - I'll read what the dickens I like thanks ! I've no problem with people offering suggestions and recommendations, but required reading ? No - it's bad enough being given those at school or college... It's like those dreadful "X Books to Read before you Die" lists - I'd die trying to read them all since at least half don't appeal to me !

If you want some ideas of good books for YA readers (as a starting point), you could always check out the mammoth Cybils nominations lists (don't bother with Septimus Heap, though !). Failing that, I can email you a list of a couple of dozen, at least, LOL !
