It has a rather hollow ring, doesn't it? I feel sad that the Somerset saint's special day has been overshadowed in some quarters, but we still celebrate it in this house.

Or at any rate, at this desk.

But I don't want to be churlish. I'm half-Welsh, after all, and St Patrick - or Maewyn Succat, to his friends - is one of Wales's greatest cultural exports. So, let us raise a glass of metheglyn along with our pint of scrumpy, and blend the cries of "Cheers me dear!" with "Iechyd da!" in joyful harmony!

Patrick could have come from just about anywhere on the west coast from Dunbar to Cornwall, including the Wirral. It'd be a nice irony if he turned out to be the first Liverpool Irishman! :o)

For myself, I'll wait for the 8th of May and my birth day saint- Saint Jeanne la Pucelle, which some folks who know me might consider singularly apt :o)

Indeed - but Wales was bigger in those days. :)

Oh, I don't know. "Wales" is just the English word for "Brythonic-speaking foreign Johnnies", after all. I think that covers everyone from Rheged to Land's End, at that date.

Well, speaking as an Aglo-Italian Scottish Breton Jewish Roma woman, what would I know? :o)

In a daft mood it was my ancestor the High King of Ireland who kidnapped Patrick. Out go the Druids in comes Christianity, abortion debates, rule from the continent. Sigh, seems so 21 century;)
