In all the post-Olympic analysis, I've yet to see any mention of the man to whom, perhaps more than other individual, the games owe their eventual success. I refer of course to Mitt Romney, whose public doubts about whether the UK was up to the job silenced the doubters at a stroke. Who, after all, could countenance being seen to agree with such a douche?

Meanwhile, I gather that his running mate has been doing excellent service in the field of healthcare by talking down the NHS.

Keep up the good work, lads - England hath need of thee!

It would be nice if they would take Stephen Dorrell off our hands, though:

"Both Europe and North America start from a position where there is a private sector and a state sector and the two are kept remarkably separate.

"Both systems are being driven in the direction of integrating the private sector and the tax supported sector because that is the only way of delivering socialised healthcare, that is, care based on need not ability to pay.

I don't think he quite understands what he's talking about either.

Indeed. I hear that Philip Hammond, meanwhile, has made the remarkable discovery that supermarkets aren't the best model for the armed forces. Who knew?

Astonishing. Not that he'll stop G4S and its ilk from continuing to take over the (non) running of the country.
