steepholm: (madness lies)

I have been, and will continue yet to be for a few days, a truant to blogging. But having spent a very enjoyable morning touring the South Downs with my brother and mother, ending with a pint at the Devil's Dyke (from which the Hog's Back is very visible, I now learn), I want to share a new game to enhance any journey through idyllic countryside.

There are only two rules:

1) whenever you see a particularly beautiful view, say loudly (preferably so that you can be overheard by other sightseers), "And this is where they're going to site the new Tesco Extra?";

2) whenever you see an ancient windmill, sigh theatrically and exclaim, "Bloody windfarms!"

Tolkien's version was to react to any building erected since his previous visit by saying, "There goes the last of England's arable!"

That's lovely - and typical of his humour.

I know that spot very well, we take FIL there sometimes. There's a brass plaque at the view point which states that you can see our village in the Chilterns from there. You would need a good imagination.

Because my mother can't totter very far, we didn't even wander to the viewpoint, but stuck firmly to within three feet of the pub. But that does seem optimistic.

Lovely part of the world, that. I've walked the South Downs way a number of times.

I don't know the area well, but I always feel at home in a chalkscape.
