Well, it's been quite a year. First I discover I'm a rector of the Church of England, and now I find I've been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, even if (as is common with the Nobel) I'm having to share it. It's hard to say which moves me more, but the latter will certainly look better on my CV.

I've done the maths, and by my calculation (dividing the value of the Nobel prize by the population of the EU) I am due about one seventh of a penny. If I pool my money with the other people in my road, this means we can collectively buy a packet of crisps. But then the disputes begin, of course... Which flavour?

Ah, avaunt, you apple of Ate! This is just what the EU was designed to avoid!

I am basking in glory, and the outrage of Nigel Farage. I would march through the streets of New York proudly waving my European passport, except I don't think anybody would understand why.

Well, it reflects an actual achievement, which is more than we can say for the award to Obama in recognition of his not being G. W. Bush, but I don't think it makes a lot of sense to give a prize to half a billion people, even if I'm one of them.

Well, a lot of their choices have been head-scratchers, but this one I liked.

Fair enough!

(My hot tip for next year? Apple pie: it's been denied too long.)

My husband and I were doing similar calculations when we heard the news that we were now joint holders (along with millions of other people) of a Nobel prize.

Of course as well as the money, there is also a medal and diploma. Now when my kids were at school, accepted practice was that any joint winners of a cup got to take turns to keep it on their mantelpieces. So when do I get my turn to display the medal? Alternatively, considering that the journey of the Olympic flame around the UK turned out to be more fun and more popular than I had anticipated, perhaps something similar could be arranged for the Nobel medal so we can all get a chance to look at it? :)

All very good points. My back-of-envelope calculation suggests that we are entitled to have the medal and diploma for just over a half a second each - so a large family might be entitled to keep them almost long enough to read them! These are exciting times indeed.
