So now Stuart Hall's been arrested for rape. Piece by piece, my '70s TV childhood is being dismantled, although so far its inner core remains intact. If John Noakes, or Oliver Postgate, or (heavens forfend!) Morecambe and Wise should prove false, then fall Caesar! But I do not expect it.

Peter Purves' shirts were a bit dodgy and so was his hair but I don't think that makes him a rapist. Though you never know.

Indeed not. But he has an unfortunate name in the current climate.

And he changed it to "Purves"? Whose bright idea was that, I wonder?

Was it by any chance a huge inflatable hamster trying climb a water slide towards some polystyrene seeds? If so, I may have seen it.

As far as I know he's not even been charged yet. I'm not leaping to conclusions about his guilt, but bewailing the loss of my own innocence, as it were.

Mind you, I've not heard of any of the people you (or the commenters) mention except for Morecambe and Wise, so since the news doesn't seem to have hit Wikipedia yet, and there are several Stuart Halls thereon, is this the Stuart Hall who was given the OBE only this year, and who was once formally lauded in Parliament as "an icon with the youth of today"? Oh dear.

This is the sports commentator who was a co-presenter of It's a Knockout (and its euro-equivalent, Jeux Sans Frontières). He is well known for regularly breaking down in helpless laughter on air.

And yes, that does seem to be the one you're thinking of... Sigh.

I do actually know the owner of the 'hands' from Vision On and she is a professional dominatrix. A nice woman, though. I also seem to know a lot of people who know Rolf Harris and who all adore him.

That would be unbearable. I heard an interview with Brian not long ago; he sounded very elderly and had nice stories about how modern icons keep coming up to him to proclaim their undying love and admiration. I don't know how I'd handle it if they were all wrong.

Of course, one of the great names from the 50s and 60s -- trumpeted as "the greatest British children's writer of the century" -- had already paved the way for this sorry saga. William Mayne, convicted of child abuse in 2004, imprisoned for two years, committed suicide (I think) 2010.
