Second, Robert McFarlane on the radio again, this time tramping the Icknield Way with Clare Balding. A much more satisfactory outing than the rather stilted set of programmes on Edward Thomas a few months ago, with MacFarlane sniffing trees and coining metaphors like a terrier with a doctorate. This being radio, you are at liberty to imagine that Balding has him on a lead.

Funny how putting clothes on the sculptures makes them so much less distant. Suddenly I can see them as people. The shift in how I saw them came as a strange surprise.

Yeah, I felt the same way. Of course the Greeks painted theirs, so I wonder if this gives you something like that effect, mutatis mutandis.

I know what you mean. I suspect the surprise lies in the realization that one hadn't been seeing them as people before.

I think I saw them as people, but it might be since I took life drawing. Not sure if I always did.
