Prince William, like his father before him, has spent time in the army, navy and air force. Why? Because, we are often told, one day he will be head of the armed forces.
But one day will also be head of the Church of England. So... when will he be spending his year as a curate in an inner-city parish? I can't help feeling that, since we seem to be stuck with a monarchy and an established church for the moment, that would be a better preparation for kingship.
