This is so bizarre that I can't just let it sink below the billows of Facebook's sea foam but must preserve it here for future generations. All aboard for the Pan-Celtic tour...
That is... well, bizarre is the only possible word. Welsh men do not wear kilts and never have done, though of course I don't need to tell you that! But in case any foreigners are reading these comments:
"Although Lady Llanover created 'a weird and wonderful' costume made for her court harpist (see photograph), she was not particularly concerned with a national costume for men. As a result, Welsh men do not have a national dress, although attempts have been made in recent decades to 'revive' a Welsh kilt which never in fact existed!"
Speaking from a place of ignorance in the USA. I thought it was a utilikilt. I was more put off by the fact that he was wearing a snood!
I read the article on Welsh women's clothing. To me it looks like the clothing worn by the women of Peru, a little bit. Sometimes in my old neighborhood you could see women newly arrived, still wearing the big skirt, and the tall hat, with the baby on a shawl on her back. Also sturdy boots. These are brightly colored, and pretty, but hard wearing and absolutely made to work in.
I am still insulted on all possible levels by this. The bizarre outfit, the Irish music and fake Scottish kilt masquerading as Welsh, and most of all the idea that Americans are as a whole too stupid to understand what Wales is. I mean, it's not like we have a whole National Welsh-American Foundation, or a North American Festival of Wales, or a bunch of people learning Welsh or anything--oh wait. :p
