Now Earth’s tide’s at the fullest, and the Sun
Draws in her long-cast nets. Here is a trawl
Engrossing all that breathes. We are all spun
In that fine silk: creatures that squirm and crawl

Through putrid shallows, those that throng the deep
In eyeless silence, we whom they appal so.
Her nets are quite indifferent, catch and keep
The rest – and we, poor flotsam, also.

...and dying so, sleep our sweet sleep no more (straight from memory but it sticks like glue so I checked on it being true:)

Weirdly I've never got around to Gaudy Night, though I feel as I know it well by osmosis (cf. Georgette Heyer).

No need to, don't somehow, think it's your kind of thing, it's just one of mine, in fact one, I first learnt Engrish by and know if not by heart then only too well (often re-read when ill; the whole series, still works, like pageing through catalogues does) but it was the deep&keep that made me. Sayers is only trying to show off (man merkt die Absicht und ist verstimmt) as Vane, whereas you are not and I like yours much better. I have not the slightest sense of Midsommar as the summer solstice is called in Viking Land, it gets lost here in the South-West.

I really liked this, especially the phrase "in eyeless silence". It would make a good story title.
