A PS from my last post, for the benefit of [livejournal.com profile] a_d_medievalist and [livejournal.com profile] rymenhild, who are sadly separated from their copies of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

The Jollification of Silenus

N.B. It may in fact be Bacchus rather than Silenus who is pictured here. The text, like the picture, is a little ambiguous.

Given their depiction in Prince Caspian, where Bacchus is "a youth, dressed only in a fawn-skin, with vine-leaves wreathed in his curly hair. His face would have been almost too pretty for a boy's, if it had not looked so extremely wild" and Silenus is "the man on the donkey, who was old and enormously fat", it's Silenus. But Pauline Baynes presumably wouldn't have had that clue at the time.

(I am highly entertained to find that, when I googled for the relevant passage to save myself getting the book out and typing it up, most of the sites listing it were attempting to use it to prove that Lewis was a Satanist.)

It does indeed look as though there is jollification happening.

It took a couple of seconds to resolve itself - until I worked out it was a horn I thought it was Bacchus', er, horn sticking up.

"[Six-inch] tuna melt panini" is the double entendre du jour around these, er, parts. Although six inches is not entirely necessary. Missus.

The ambiguity of the faun's cheek isn't helping.

Yep -- I recognised exactly what you meant, but agree that it's pretty clear that those things are part of the faun's head :-)

Really.

I mean it.

Some people have dirty minds, is all.

Really.

PS -- thanks so much for posting it!

Now that I see the picture (I am one of the bookless) I have to agree with your interpretation. Eeek.

Just re-read original post. It's your student's interpretation I agree with I'm afraid.
