From Down with the Romans by Stewart Ross (2006), in which we meet a kinder, gentler Boudicca:

‘There are times,’ she sighed, ‘when I wish I wasn’t queen of the Iceni.’

*blink*

May I recommend Rosemary Sutcliff's Song for a Dark Queen (1978) stat?

Oh you may, you may - Sutcliff is wonderful, and I haven't read that one yet.

but even Homer nods

Mind you, in Blood and Sand, Sutcliff does have a young bridegroom noticing on his wedding night that his bride has "woman bits". Alas, his "manhood" puts in an appearance too....

Eek! Probably he puts it over his head so that he doesn't have to see the woman bits...

It's quite good; the life of Boudicca narrated by Cadwan, a bard of the Iceni, intercut with letters sent home by the young Gnaeus Julius Agricola. Consider it recommended!

Awesome.

We thought of you and [livejournal.com profile] lady_schrapnell yesterday, in Cardiff Castle - they have an excellent new introductory film thingy, featuring evil Roman centurions oppressing gentle, slightly feckless curly-haired Welsh boys in t-shirts, and with scary blood-red Roman eagles projected all round the room. Totally worth seeing.

Brilliant! I/we shall go with Box Brownie at the ready. (p.s. I left an email for [livejournal.com profile] gerald, re. Pan's Labyrinth).
