Perhaps the transfer of the ball from one pocket to the other is intended to suggest an umpire counting the over?

Joyce's school played cricket, if I remember correctly, and there are references to the game in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses (most notably when Bloom reads about Iremonger's century in the paper) and Finnegans Wake.
