What better occasion than Christmas to compare gay marriage to Nazism? Thanks to the Bishop of Shrewsbury for that, not forgetting the festive contributions of the Archbishop of Westminster and, of course, the Pope. Really feeling the love there, lads. You're a wonderful advertisement for your faith.

To any actual Christians out there, Merry Christmas!

Yes, I was disgusted by all that. So much for love and forgiveness.

I'd call them whiny, but I think that may be due to the Doppler effect as they recede at an ever quickening rate into irrelevance.

just to help mitigate the effects of that, here is a video one of my church's bishops made for It Gets Better a while back. it helps me remember not every public face of my religion is actually a jerk.

Merry Christmas! Hope it's lovely. :)

Absolutely. Like the man said, some of my best friends are Christians! Only the jerks are jerks: and by their jerkiness ye shall know them.

Merry Christmas to you, too! It's been pleasant rather than lovely so far, but I'm hoping things will pick up around 3pm, when I see my daughter. I hope you're having a wonderful day.

I have been very good and not put the computer on until I'd cooked and eaten lunch. Now I'm too full of food and wine to do anything that requires coherent thought so here I am reading my LJ friend posts. :)

Happy Christmas to you! I hope your day livens up when you see your daughter.

I admire your self-control!

Thank you, and yes - my day perked up wonderfully once it was bedaughtered, as it usually does! I hope you had a good time too.

If that is what the church hierarchy pronounces, then that is Christianity. Have you noticed that Christianity has to be dragged kicking and screaming into the world of the Enlightenment, and this can only be accomplished by changing the church to conform to the civil society of modern liberal states? On its own, it's antithetical to progressive reform. Better to acknowledge what it is and be shut of the whole thing,

Coming from a Quaker background, I don't identify Christianity with the church hierarchy (I'm not sure most of the Anglicans I know do either - I wouldn't like to speak for the Catholics). However, I agree it tends to be two steps behind, certainly over the last few hundred years. Many individual social reformers have been Christians, but I can't think of an instance where reform as been led from the top (Desmond Tutu??) and often the Church as been kicking against the pricks, as it were.

I'm agnostic myself, but since the bishops still have ex officio seats in Parliament, and all the influence that Establishment gives them, and since several of the people I care about most are Christians, I can't ignore it.

I'm a Quaker as you know and this bigotry simply saddens me. Small wonder their pews are emptying year on year.
