So, I was a legionary marching out of Venta Belgarum. Just outside the city we had to march under a triumphal arch, which was covered in interesting carvings, one of which showed the unmistakable form of the horned god Cernunnos. I called to my decurion, and explained that I was a bit of a collector of Cernunnos images and would it be okay if I took a picture? He reluctantly agreed, and I got out my digital camera, while the legion waited impatiently. But could I get the zoom to work? I was all fingers and thumbs, in the way of dreams (and, in my case, not-dreams), and could feel the irritation of my fellow-legionaries growing all the time, when behold, I awoke! And my children were bringing me breakfast in bed. Go, the 21st century!

I once fancied writing a TV sitcom set in Housesteads camp, in which the equivalent of the pub would be that fantastic latrine where I'm sure all the Roman squaddies went to skive and gossip.

Brilliant! Somewhere I have one of those joke Latin books which tells you how to say things like 'My camera isn't working.'

I had my first ever camera anxiety dream at the very end of last year (I wanted to photograoh the heavy snow, which unnerved me since this was just before the snow started.

I no longer have exam dreams, so it would seem that my anxiety is looking for new ways to express itself!

I love the detail of this - that you knew exactly which Roman settlement you were in and asked permission to take the photo!

I grew up near Winchester, so that particular settlement is buried deep in my psyche!

Not dorky at all, terrific. I love the detail, the mixture of ancient and modern, the neat combination of participant in a historical event and modern tourist/voyeur. In fact I envy you this dream.
