The last Korean film I saw in the cinema before Parasite was The Handmaiden. Like Parasite, it's a dark comedy about grifters inveigling their way into the lives of a rich family.

The last Japanese film I saw in the cinema before Parasite was Shoplifters. Like Parasite, it's a contemporary film about a indigent family using ingenious but dishonest means to get by in a harsh world.

All three are very good films. Still, while I don't begrudge Parasite its Oscar, the other two were significantly better. Shoplifters, in particular, is a masterpiece.

I see 1917 won a couple of technical ones- but it deserved more.

Sadly, Shoplifters seems to have passed Peter Bradshaw by. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2020/feb/13/classics-of-modern-south-korean-cinema-ranked

No, I'm being unfair - I didn't take in that that was a Japanese film, so it was unreasonable for me to look for it in a South Korean film list. And he does agree about The Handmaiden.
