Is it just a bit tacky? Possibly. Do I care? Not really. I've not slept there yet, but will be trying it out tomorrow.

Meanwhile, I've been reflecting guiltily on the fact that when I see this sign:



my distaste at seeing Colston's legacy celebrated (at least for now)* is mitigated by my involuntary satisfaction at seeing not one but two apostrophes correctly placed - such a rare treat these days! Whereas, when I saw this on Colston's plinth the other day:



my approval of the sentiment was almost overwhelmed by an urge to correct the spelling. I suppose this is what's meant by trahison des clercs.

* Colston's Girls' School was one of three in Bristol named after Colston. The first, my children's old primary, changed its name a year or two back; the second, a private school, is retaining it. CGS voted recently to become Montpelier High School, Montpelier (one 'l') being the area of Bristol it's in. The logo will be designed by Michelle Curtis, who also designed the Seven Saints of St Pauls - an excellent choice.

I am one of those who finds incorrectly-placed apostrophes particularly irritating.

Aren't some of the things named for Colston actually named for the street which in turn is named for the man? That simultaneously 1) decreases the toxicity, 2) increases the toxicity by spreading it around, 3) makes it (or should make it) easier and less controversial to change the name.

I'm not sure. There are definitely streets named after Colston (at least for now): there seems to have been a general mid-late Victorian rage for naming things after him, more or less at random - in addition to a few things that he named after himself a couple of centuries earlier.

It looks very much Max's bedroom, to me, and you'll soon sail off in and out of weeks and almost over a year. Also the Wild Things' island is probably appropriately socially distant, and you can be their queen.

The apostrophe thing made me laugh as being dyslexic my ability to get their placement right is not consistent, and the way I've always remembered how to place them is the recall where they are in Colston's Girls' School. (None of the teachers would have been impressed if we'd got it wrong, but Mrs Hughes the Deputy Head was particularly fierce on the matter).

I'm happy the name changed, (and in fact voted to change it by dint of being and Old Girl), but I'm hoping it's able to retain the connection to the ugly medieval style dolphins. Certainly when I was there we were fairly certain EC would not have approved of our school, but we loved the ugly Dolphins.

(It also doesn't surprise me that Colston Collegiate, (Colston's Boys that was) voted to keep the name. There was a reason we as a school hated the posh twats. (They in turn hated us for not being posh)

(I keep on going back and forth on whether to keep this icon, but it was the uniform I wore and having escaped from Redmaids it was a sanctuary to me at that time)

I'm glad I'm not alone in fixating on those apostrophes! Sadly, I suspect that ugly dolphins (though a great name for a New Wave band) may not be central to Michelle Curtis's design - but we'll see.
